Valentine Sugar Cookies

Delight in these soft and buttery Valentine Sugar Cookies, perfectly shaped for a romantic treat that melts in your mouth and is ideal for gifting or sharing.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Red and pink sanding sugar or sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until dough is soft but not sticky.
  6. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.
  7. Place cookies onto prepared baking sheets and sprinkle with sanding sugar or sprinkles.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For extra flair, decorate cooled cookies with royal icing and add edible glitter or small candy hearts.
