Twisted Christmas Cookies

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until just incorporated.
  6. Divide dough in half; mix cocoa powder into one half until evenly combined.
  7. Roll both dough halves into long rectangles approximately 10×5 inches.
  8. Place the chocolate dough on top of the vanilla dough and gently press together.
  9. Starting from one short end, tightly roll the dough layers into a log and twist the log gently to create a spiral effect.
  10. Slice the log into 1/4-inch thick cookies and place on prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  12. Allow cookies to cool completely before dusting with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

For an extra festive touch, drizzle melted white chocolate over cooled cookies or add crushed peppermint candy on top.
