Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup whole milk (for tres leches soak)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, melted butter, salt, and eggs; whisk until combined.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the milk mixture and stir to combine.
  4. Gradually add in the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  7. Roll out the dough into a rectangle approximately 16×12 inches.
  8. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.
  9. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle it evenly over the buttered dough.
  10. Starting with the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log and cut into 12 equal rolls.
  11. Place rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  12. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  13. While rolls bake, combine evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract to make the tres leches soak.
  14. Once rolls are out of the oven, poke each roll with a fork or skewer and slowly pour the milks over the warm rolls, allowing them to soak in.
  15. Mix powdered sugar and milk to make a drizzle glaze and drizzle over soaked rolls.
  16. Let rolls cool slightly before serving to allow the soak to absorb fully.

Notes

For extra indulgence, top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon before serving.
