Southern turnip greens recipe

These Southern turnip greens are slow-cooked to tender perfection with smoked ham hock for a rich and savory flavor. A classic comfort food, they’re a must-have side dish for any Southern meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds fresh turnip greens, washed and chopped
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Add the smoked ham hock to the pot and pour in the chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 1 hour, or until the ham hock is tender.
  3. Remove the ham hock from the pot and let it cool slightly. Shred the meat from the bone and discard the skin and bone. Return the shredded ham to the pot.
  4. Add the chopped turnip greens, apple cider vinegar, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper to the pot. Stir well to combine.
  5. Cover the pot and simmer for at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the turnip greens are very tender. Stir occasionally and add more chicken broth if needed to prevent sticking.
  6. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve hot.

Notes

Serve with hot sauce for an extra kick. For a vegetarian version, omit the ham hock and use vegetable broth, adding a teaspoon of smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
