Golden Southern Baked Mac and Cheese

This Southern Baked Mac and Cheese is creamy, cheesy, and boasts a perfectly golden-brown crust. It’s the ultimate comfort food, perfect for any occasion.

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk and heavy cream until smooth.
  4. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  6. Add cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Gruyere cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth.
  7. Stir in cooked macaroni until well coated.
  8. Pour macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy topping, mix 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs with 2 tablespoons melted butter and sprinkle over the mac and cheese before baking.
