These fudgy sourdough discard brownies combine tangy sourdough flavor with rich chocolate, creating a moist and delicious dessert perfect for any occasion.

  • 1 cup sourdough starter discard (unfed)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until combined.
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, stirring well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Fold in the sourdough discard until the batter is smooth.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking soda.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, folding gently to combine.
  7. If desired, fold in chocolate chips for extra richness.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  10. Allow brownies to cool completely in the pan before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a nutty twist, sprinkle chopped walnuts or pecans on top before baking. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgence.
