Classic scalloped potatoes featuring tender sliced potatoes baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce perfect as a comforting side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk, continuing to stir until the sauce thickens and comes to a gentle boil.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and half of the cheddar cheese until melted.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading evenly.
  7. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese on top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add cooked bacon bits or caramelized onions between the layers before baking.
