Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies or candy canes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the peppermint extract.
  4. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until the dough comes together.
  5. Gently fold in the crushed peppermint candies.
  6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are just set but not browned.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  10. Once cool, dust with additional powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For extra festive flair, drizzle melted white chocolate over cooled cookies or press a small peppermint candy in the center before baking.
