Experience authentic Japanese flavors with this juicy and tender Yakitori grilled chicken, glazed in a savory-sweet sauce perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 8 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Chopped green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside as yakitori sauce.
  2. Thread the chicken pieces onto the soaked bamboo skewers.
  3. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat and brush with vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
  4. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, brushing generously with yakitori sauce as they cook.
  5. Cook until chicken is cooked through and sauce is caramelized, about 12-15 minutes total.
  6. Remove from heat, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve hot.

Notes

For an extra smoky flavor, try grilling over charcoal and serve with steamed rice and pickled vegetables.
