Homemade Green Bean Casserole

A classic homemade green bean casserole made with fresh green beans, a creamy mushroom sauce, and crispy fried onions for a comforting side dish perfect for any dinner.

  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Blanch green beans in boiling water for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; sauté until translucent.
  4. Add mushrooms and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in broth and cream, stirring until sauce thickens.
  7. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
  8. Toss blanched green beans with the mushroom sauce.
  9. Transfer mixture to a baking dish and top with crispy fried onions.
  10. Bake for 25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.

Notes

For extra richness, stir in a handful of shredded cheddar cheese before baking. Serve hot alongside roasted meats or holiday dishes.
