Homemade Candy Apples

Crisp apples coated in a shiny, sweet candy shell make for a classic treat perfect for parties and festive occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, washed and dried
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • Wooden sticks

Instructions

  1. Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple and set them aside on a parchment-lined tray.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir until sugar dissolves.
  3. Attach a candy thermometer to the saucepan and let the mixture boil without stirring until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
  4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in red food coloring.
  5. Dip each apple into the hot candy mixture, turning to coat evenly.
  6. Lift the apple, letting excess candy drip off, then place it on the parchment to cool and harden completely.
  7. Allow candy coating to set before serving, approximately 30 minutes.

Notes

For added flavor, sprinkle chopped nuts or decorative sprinkles on the candy apples immediately after dipping before the coating hardens.
