Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits

Fluffy, buttery homemade buttermilk biscuits that are perfect for breakfast or as a side with any meal. These easy-to-make biscuits come out tender with a golden crust every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in cold buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together; do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Fold the dough in half and pat down again; repeat this folding 2 more times to create layers.
  7. Roll out to 1-inch thickness and cut biscuits with a 2.5-inch round cutter.
  8. Place biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier edges.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown on top.
  10. Remove from oven and serve warm with butter and honey or gravy.

Notes

For extra flaky biscuits, use chilled ingredients and handle the dough minimally. Serve warm with honey butter or sausage gravy for a comforting meal.
