Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, for rolling
  • 1/2 cup orange sanding sugar, for rolling
  • Black gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  3. Divide the dough in half. Tint one half of the dough black with gel food coloring.
  4. Cover both halves of the dough with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. In separate shallow bowls, place the granulated sugar and orange sanding sugar.
  7. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Dip each ball first in the granulated sugar, then in the orange sanding sugar, ensuring they are well coated.
  8. Place the coated cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops are crackled.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
