  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (red or pink, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  4. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk one tablespoon at a time until dough is soft but not sticky.
  5. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  6. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are just starting to turn golden.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool on wire racks.
  9. For the frosting, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
  10. Spread frosting on cooled cookies and allow to set before serving.

Notes

For extra decoration, sprinkle colored sugar or edible glitter on the frosting before it sets.
