French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes on Buns

These French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes combine the comforting flavors of a French onion soup with the fun of a classic sloppy joe. Savory caramelized onions and rich beef simmered in a flavorful broth, all piled high on toasted buns!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • 4 slices Gruyere cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Reduce heat if onions start to burn.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Season the beef with salt and pepper. Sprinkle flour over the beef and onions, and stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
  4. Pour in beef broth and red wine (if using). Stir to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, and ketchup. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  6. Spoon the beef mixture onto toasted hamburger buns.
  7. Top with Gruyere cheese slices (if using) and serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a pinch of dried thyme or a bay leaf to the sauce while it simmers. Serve with a side of fries or coleslaw.
