Chicken and Dumplings

A comforting classic Southern dish featuring tender chicken simmered in a rich broth with soft, fluffy dumplings. Perfect for cozy family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions, carrots, and celery; sauté until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add chicken broth and bring to a gentle boil.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk until a soft dough forms.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the boiling broth, cover the pot, and reduce heat to simmer.
  5. Cook the dumplings for 15 minutes, avoiding lifting the lid to ensure proper rising.
  6. Stir in shredded chicken, pepper, and parsley; cook for an additional 5 minutes until heated through.
  7. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a splash of heavy cream before serving or garnish with fresh thyme.
