Indulge in creamy, cheesy goodness with this classic au gratin potatoes recipe. Thinly sliced potatoes are baked in a rich cheese sauce until tender and bubbly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Add Gruyere cheese and cheddar cheese to the sauce and stir until melted and smooth.
  6. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour a third of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Repeat layers twice more, ending with the remaining cheese sauce.
  8. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try using heavy cream instead of milk. Add a pinch of garlic powder to the cheese sauce for extra depth.
