Cheese Fondue Recipe

This classic cheese fondue is a warm and creamy dish perfect for sharing, featuring a blend of melted cheeses and white wine for a rich, flavorful experience.

  • 1 clove garlic, halved
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 8 oz Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 8 oz Emmental cheese, grated
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp kirsch (cherry brandy), optional
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste
  • Bread cubes, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Rub the inside of a fondue pot with garlic halves, then discard garlic.
  2. Pour white wine and lemon juice into the pot and heat over medium until hot but not boiling.
  3. Gradually add the grated cheeses, stirring constantly until melted and smooth.
  4. Mix cornstarch with kirsch (if using) and stir into the cheese mixture to thicken.
  5. Season with black pepper and nutmeg to taste.
  6. Keep the fondue warm over a low flame and serve immediately with bread cubes for dipping.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a splash of dry mustard or substituting the kirsch with brandy. Serve with assorted dippers like steamed vegetables or cooked potatoes.
