Homemade Char Siu Chicken on White Plate

Char Siu Chicken features tender, marinated chicken in a sweet and savory Cantonese barbecue sauce, perfect for a quick and flavorful dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine or dry sherry
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • Red food coloring (optional, for authentic color)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, five-spice powder, Shaoxing wine, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and food coloring (if using).
  2. Place the chicken thighs in a resealable bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking tray with foil and set a wire rack on top.
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade, reserving the marinade.
  5. Place the chicken on the rack and roast for 20 minutes.
  6. Baste the chicken with the reserved marinade halfway through roasting.
  7. For a caramelized finish, broil the chicken for 2-3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  8. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best flavor, marinate overnight and serve sliced over steamed rice with sautéed greens.
