  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt 1/2 cup butter in a 9-inch round cake pan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar until dissolved. Remove from heat.
  3. Arrange apple slices in a decorative pattern over the caramel mixture.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In another bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. Pour batter over apples in the cake pan.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra decadent treat.
