Homemade Butter Chicken

Indulge in the creamy, tomato-based delight of Butter Chicken. This classic Indian dish features tender chicken simmered in a rich and flavorful sauce, perfect for a comforting and satisfying meal.

  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder (or to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, for garnish
  • Cooked rice or naan bread, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, marinate the chicken with ginger-garlic paste, garam masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until golden brown.
  3. Add the marinated chicken to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.
  5. Stir in the heavy cream and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  6. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with cooked rice or naan bread.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of honey or sugar to the sauce. You can also add a squeeze of lemon juice for a bit of tang.
