Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound broccoli florets, fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup buttered bread crumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Steam or boil broccoli florets until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and softened cream cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
  7. Gently fold in the cooked broccoli florets.
  8. Pour the broccoli mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  9. Top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and buttered bread crumbs (if using).
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  11. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce. Serve as a side dish with roasted chicken, ham, or pork.
