Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warmed milk, sugar, egg, and softened butter; mix well.
  2. Gradually add the flour and salt, kneading until a smooth dough forms; cover and let rise for 4-6 hours or until doubled.
  3. Roll the dough out on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
  4. Sprinkle the lemon zest evenly over the dough, then scatter fresh blueberries on top.
  5. Carefully roll the dough into a tight log and cut into 12 equal pieces.
  6. Place the rolls into a greased baking dish and cover; let rise for another 1-2 hours until puffy.
  7. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. While the rolls bake, mix powdered sugar with lemon juice and milk to create a glaze.
  9. Remove rolls from oven and drizzle with lemon glaze; serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle a little cinnamon with the lemon zest before rolling, or serve warm with a pat of butter.
