Golden, bubbling homemade Baked Mac and Cheese

This baked mac and cheese recipe is a family favorite! Cheesy, creamy, and perfectly bubbly, it’s comfort food at its finest and always a crowd-pleaser.

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  4. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and paprika.
  6. Add cheddar and Gruyere cheese, stirring until melted and smooth.
  7. Stir in cooked macaroni.
  8. Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  9. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Sprinkle over the macaroni and cheese.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  11. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy topping, broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.
