Applesauce Cake

A moist and flavorful applesauce cake that blends warm spices with tender applesauce for a perfect autumn dessert.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in applesauce and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. Fold in nuts if using.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow cake to cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra flavor, top with a simple cream cheese frosting or a dusting of powdered sugar before serving.
