Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Mashed potatoes, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well and form into 6-8 oval-shaped patties.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the hamburger steaks on both sides. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, whisk in the flour until smooth. Gradually add the beef broth and milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring occasionally until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the sour cream and melted butter.
  6. Arrange the hamburger steaks in a baking dish. Pour the sauce over the steaks.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the steaks are cooked through.
  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, if desired.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, add a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese to the top of the bake during the last 5 minutes of baking.
